U9 Match Reports
16/11/08
Maree/Oranmore Villa and Maree/Oranmore Rangers kicked off the 2008/2009 U9 Invitational Tournament with two keenly-contested matches against Colga Albion and Colga Everton. The spoils were shared between the two clubs with Maree/Oranmore Villa beating Colga Albion 2-1 while Maree/Oranmore Rangers suffered a 3-1 reverse against Colga Everton. Maree Oranmore Villa's win came courtesy of a fine free kick from Matthew Kilgannon late in the game after Luke smyth's early goal had been cancelled out by a well-taken equaliser from the visitors. Maree/Oranmore rangers took an first half lead against Colga Everton thanks to a superb strike from Adam Hanniffy following a period of concerted pressure from the home side. However Colga Everton came back strongly and raced into a 2-1 lead before our players went all out in search of an equaliser only to concede a soft third in the closing minutes. Our final game saw Maree/Oranmore Astros take on Cregmore/Claregalway Utd. The 3-0 defeat suffered here was very hard to take given that our players performed very well and had the lion's share of the possession. However we just couldn't get past their well-marshalled defence and conceded far too easily at the other end. Well done to Cregmore/Claregalway.
30/11/08
Maree/Oranmore Villa scored a comfortable 3-0 win over Athenry Celtic with goals from Morgan O'Brien, Kevin Maguire and Luke Smyth. The home side were on top throughout but were just one up at the break thanks to some resolute defending from the Athenry side. Villa maintained the pressure in the second half and added two further goals to secure a convincing victory. Maree/Oranmore Rangers found Athenry Town a very different proposition and came out the wrong side of a 5-0 result. The raft of substitutions necessitated by the large home turnout prevented us from establishing any pattern to our play and was a major contributing factor in this defeat. That is not to take anything away from Athenry Town as they played a splendid game and were good value for their win. However the day ended on a positive note for us as Maree/Oranmore Astros secured their first win of the campaign with a hard fought victory over Cregmore/Claregalway Rovers. A second half strike from Adam Rooney was all that separated the sides in a thrilling conclusion to the days play. Maree/Oranmore Astros were on top for much of the game and Dominic Curley was denied by the woodwork in either half. However the visitors enjoyed a good spell of possession at the start of the second half and a cracking shot against the crossbar proved to be the wake-up call for our players. Well done to all three of our teams for providing a great day's entertainment.
14/12/08
A good day for the Under 9's with both Villa and Astro's securing wins to lift the club to the top of the table. Maree/Oranmore Rangers also took all three points as Craughwell struggled for numbers and could only field one team on the day. Disappointed not to be playing a competitive match the Rangers squad still enjoyed a good workout in an exciting 5-aside game on Pitch 2. Over on Pitch 1 Maree Oranmore Villa made it three wins from three games played as they comfortably overcame Craughwell Athletic by four goals to one. Jim Crowley, Kevin Byrnes, Alan Moran and Luke Smyth all found the net for the home side while Daniel O'Neill played superbly between the posts to thwart the gallant efforts of the visitors. Last up were Maree/Oranmore Astros who secured their second win on the trot in an exciting encounter with Colga Albion. All the goals came in a frantic three minute spell midway through the first half with Sean Delany putting the Astros into the lead and Aaron Connolly adding a second almost immediately from the kick-off. Colga Everton were back in the game two minutes later when Robbie Commins made a fine save only for Colga to fire home the rebound. Only the woodwork prevented the Astros from adding to their tally but we were more than happy to take the three points as Colga were always in with a shout in this match.
4/1/09
Fine weather prevailed for the opening matches of 2009 but Maree/Oranmore Rangers were the only winners on a day of contrasting fortunes for the host club. The spoils were shared in a cracking match between Maree/Oranmore Villa and Cregmore/Claregalway Rovers. Cregmore/Claregalway raced into an early lead before goals from the prolific strikerforce of Matthew Kilgannon and Luke Smyth put Villa 2-1 up at the break. The play continued to flow from end to end in the second period but clinical finishing from the visitors saw them edge into a 3-2 lead heading into the closing minutes of the match. However Villa were not to be denied and another fine goal from Matthew Kilgannon saw the home side preserve their unbeaten run in the tournament. Over on Pitch 1 Maree/Oranmore Astros were involved in a much more intense battle with Athenry Town. One goal always looked likely to decide the outcome of this match and so it proved with the visitors making the vital breakthrough midway through the second half. Chances were at a premium and the Astros couldn't make the most of the few clearcut openings that fell their way. At the other end Robbie Commins produced a fine performance between the posts to ensure that Athenry Town were limited to just the one goal. However the day ended on a high note with Maree/Oranmore Rangers comprehensively defeating Craughwell Athletic 3-0 in their best performance of the tournament to date. A long range strike from Cathal Duffy put Rangers into a 1-0 lead at the break. The home side continued to press in the second half and a great performance from Tom Walker was capped by two fine goals, the first coming from the penalty spot after Tom was felled whilst bearing down on goal. Maree/Oranmore remain top of the table despite improving their overall total by just a single point. We hold a slender one point lead over Colga who won both of their matches and were the main movers of the day. Cregmore/Claregalway slipped to third having also secured just one point on the day. However Craughwell and Athenry improved their points total by three to move right back into contention in this very competitive age group.
1/2/09
Maree/Oranmore Villa and Maree/Oranmore Astros kicked off the days proceedings with two keenly contested matches against Colga Everton and Colga Albion on a fine but bitterly cold Sunday morning on the astro turf. The two finely-balanced matches yielded three points for each club. Villa suffered their first defeat of the campaign, losing 1-0 to a strong Colga Everton outfit. The home sides best chance came via a first half penalty from Luke Smyth which crashed against the underside of the crossbar. Colga regrouped well and scored the only goal of the game midway through the second half and although Villa pressed hard in the closing stages they couldn't penetrate the strong Colga defence. Meanwhile Maree/Oranmore Astros were involved in an equally tight match against Colga Albion on Pitch 2. Colga started brightly and took the lead in the opening minutes after a mix-up in the home defence. Despite this early setback the Astros settled well and played some fine flowing football, one passage of which culminated in a neat finish from Dominic Curley midway through the half. The second half continued in much the same vein with the play switching from end to end and chances aplenty for both sides. The winning goal was scored by Tomas Carr who produced a tidy finish after a fine strike from Aaron Connolly was parried by the Colga keeper. The day finished well for the home club when Maree/Oranmore Rangers secured their third win on the trot with an ultimately comfortable 2-0 win over Corofin United. The first half ended in stalemate and although it was Corofin who did most of the pressing the home side always looked dangerous on the break. However Rangers took complete control after the restart and two fine goals from Declan Gill were enough to settle the match. There was no change in the overall positions on the league table as each club went home with a memorable win and a long-forgotten defeat. It's all still very tight at the top with just four points separating the top four clubs and all five clubs still very much in contention.
U10 Match Reports
16/11/08
Maree/Oranmore Town got the U10's off to a flying start with an 8-3 win over Colga Oyster. Three goals apiece for Luke Byrnes and Nathan Lynskey and a brace from Declan Harte ensured that the result of this game was never in doubt. Maree/Oranmore Village were involved in a much more keenly-contested encounter with Colga Weir. Having gone in 2-0 down at the break Maree/Oranmore Village produced a stirring second half comeback with goals from Eoin Rockall and Sean Reddington (2) putting them into a 3-2 lead. However Colga Weir weren't to be denied and duly scored from a corner in the last minute of the game to grab a share of the spoils.
30/11/08
Maree/Oranmore and Athenry served up two highly entertaining games in the early morning frost on the grass pitch. Two goals from Eoin Rockall seemed set to secure Maree/Oranmore Village three precious points in a hard-fought game against Athenry Heritage. However a late and somewhat controversial equaliser secured a share of the spoils for the visitors. Meanwhile goals from Luke Byrnes, Kealin Eyers and Nathan Lynskey made it two wins on the trot for Maree/Oranmore Town in another exciting match against Athenry Castle.
14/12/08
Another successful outing for the U10's with both teams maintaining their unbeaten start to the campaign. Maree/Oranmore Village secured their first win in some style with a comprehensive 7-2 victory over Cregmore/Claregalway Lights. Having gone 1-0 down against the run of play Village levelled before the break and raced into a 4-1 after a whirlwind start to the second half. The home side continued to dominate running out 7-2 winners at the final whistle. Goals from Ross Malone (3), Eoin Rockall (2) and Oisin Doyle (2) capped a great team performance from our players. Maree/Oranmore Town didn't have it quite so easy and seemed set to suffer their first defeat when trailing 3-0 at the break to the impressive Cregmore/Claregalway Bypass. However the home side produced a stunning second half comeback and goals from Nathan Lynskey and Luke Byrnes either side of a brace from Keelan Eyres put our lads 4-3 ahead with the clock winding down. The never-say-die attitude of Cregmore/Claregalway saw them grab a last-gasp equaliser in a thrilling finale to the match. Three wins and three draws leaves Maree/Oranmore joint table-toppers with Colga after the first series of matches.
4/1/09
Maree/Oranmore Village preserved their unbeaten record in a highly entertaining 3-3 draw with Colga Oyster. The visitors started brightly and raced into a two goal lead before Chistopher Mooney pulled one back for the home side shortly before the break. Village were clearly in the ascendency in the opening stages of the second half and a fine cross from James Delany was neatly dispatched to the net by Christopher for his second goal of the match. The same two players combined again when Christopher raced through the Colga rearguard before squaring to James who fired powerfully past the hapless Colga keeper. The points seemed secure when the referee indicated one minute remaining. However Colga continued to press for an equaliser and it duly arrived with almost the last kick of the game. Maree/Oranmore Town suffered their first defeat of the campaign but it certainly wasn't due to a lack of effort from the boys in blue and white. After falling behind to an early strike from the visiting Colga Oyster outfit Town piled on the pressure and did everything except score against an impressive Colga rearguard. The woodwork was rattled on a couple of occasions and the ball was scrambled off the line on another but try as they might the home side just couldn't find that elusive equaliser. Colga now proudly sit at the top of the table but Maree/Oranmore and Athenry are breathing down their necks and with two games in hand Cregmore/Claregalway are far from out it as the tournament approaches the halfway stage.
1/2/09
The spoils were shared batween Maree/Oranmore and Colga after two competitive fixtures opened the days play on the grass pitch. Maree/Orantown Town had a comfortable 4-0 win over Colga Weir with Luke Byrnes scoring a splendid hat-trick for the home team. However Colga River secured three crucial points for the visitors with a narrow 2-1 win over Maree/Oranmore Village. Colga were dominant in the early stages of this game and raced into a 2-0 lead before Village began their fightback. A fine goal from Oisin Doyle in the closing stages gave the home side some hope but Cloga held on comfortably for a deserved 2-1 win. Colga remain top of the table with Athenry sneaking past Maree/Oranmore into second place. However with just four points separating these three clubs this group is still very much alive. A late challenge from Cregmore/Claregalway cannot be discounted either as they still have two games in hand.
22/2/09
First up for the U10's were Maree/Oranmore Village who set the tone for the day with a splendid 5-2 win over Athenry Castle. Village raced into an early two-goal lead with goals from Eoin Rockall and Christopher Mooney but Castle pulled one back before the break to set up an exciting second period. It was touch and go for a while as the play flowed from end to end in the early stages of the second half but Town gradually took control and goals from Oisin Doyle, Sean Reddington and an own goal from an unfortunate Athenry defender saw the home side run out comfortable 5-2 winners. Maree/Oranmore Town completed a memorable day for the home side with Keelan Eyers scoring the only goal of the game in a tight encounter with the ever-improving Corofin United. Town were undoubtedly worthy winners of this match but they will be looking to step up the pace in their final two outings of the tournament. With all three Colga teams winning on the day they remain in a very strong position at the top of the table but this group is far from over heading into the final two rounds of matches.
U9 Match Reports (Continued)
22/2/09
Maree/Oranmore Astros had a very comfortable win over Athenry Celtic with Aaron Connolly, Dominic Curley, Adam Rooney, Sean Delany, Cian O'Toole and Cian Manning all getting their names on the scoresheet. The match was a very one-sided affair with the effectively won well before half-time. Most pleasing for the coaches however was the fine passing and movement displayed by the home side. Hopefully we can carry this approach and form into the tournaments remaining matches. Maree/Oranmore Villa were involved in a much tighter and more exciting contest with Athenry Town on Pitch 1. A great strike from Luke Smyth put the home side in the driving seat but Town came storming back with two goals before the break and one shortly after to move into a commanding 3-1 lead. Villa then showed great spirit and determination and Luke Smyth pulled a goal back before Matthew Kilgannon brought the sides level with a fine headed goal from a corner kick. Jim Crowley sealed a memorable victory with a neat finish in the closing minutes of the match. Last up for the host club were Maree/Oranmore Rangers who suffered a 6-0 defeat at the hands of a very strong Colga Everton outfit. After three wins on the trot this was a disappointing reversal for the Rangers but the players are determined to put matters right on their next outing. Two wins apiece for nearest rivals Colga and Craughwell mean there is no change at the top of the table heading into the final four rounds of matches.
1/3/09
Maree/Oranmore Astros and Maree/Oranmore Rangers played out an exciting 1-1 draw ensuring all players went home satisfied with their teams performance on Sunday. The pitch was a little crowded as the coaches decided to play 12 a-side to ensure that everybody got as much playing time as possible. The astros were on top in the first half and a well-struck shot from Aaron Connolly gave them a one-goal lead going into the break. However the Rangers came out fighting in the second half and scored a well-deserved equaliser when Declan Gill fired home after a hectic goalmouth scramble. The closing minutes saw the astros press hard for what would have been a winning goal but the Rangers defence held tight for a deserved share of the spoils. Maree/Oranmore Villa did not play today but both they and the Rangers have two games to look forward to next week.
15/3/09
Maree/Oranmore Astros lost 2-1 in a very exciting encounter with Craughwell Wanderers on Sunday afternoon. There was no let-up in the pace of this game as both teams served up some delightful free-flowing football. A splendid goal from Aaron Connolly put the Astros firmly in the driving seat in the first quarter but Craughwell gave as good as they got and tied up the game at 1-1 going into the break. The second half continued in much the same vein as the first with chances coming and going at either end. However it was the visitors who grabbed the all-important second goal that was to settle this contest. The Astros battled bravely thereafter and piled on the pressure in the closing stages but they couldn't find a way past the well-marshalled Wanderers defence. Meanwhile Maree/Oranmore Villa had to show great patience to battle their way to a deserved 2-0 win over Corofin Utd. Corofin have improved immensely as this tournament progresses and they quickly realised that a strong rearguard action was required to keep the free-scoring Villa at bay. However Villa kept plugging away and goals from Alan Moran in the first half and Dylan Gallagher in the second were just reward for their efforts. Last up for the host club were Maree/Oranmore Rangers, who were desperately unlucky to lose by a scoreline of 5-1 in what was for the most part a very tight contest. The well-drilled Cregmore/Claregalway United team were deserving of their win but the final scoreline did not do justice to the performance of the home team. Having gone two goals in the opening quarter the Rangers took this match by the scruff of the neck and piled on the pressure on the United defence. Their efforts were rewarded when Declan Gill put them back in the match with another fine goal to add to his recent tally. The Rangers pressed hard for an equaliser and came very close on a couple of occasions but a breakaway goal for the visitors knocked the heart out of the home team. Two soft goals in the closing stages sealed the win for United but left the Rangers feeling a bit frustrated at the lack of reward for their efforts.
